Description:

Visitors to the park enjoy its unique facilities, including a memorial to Hoosier astronaut Virgil I. 'Gus' Grissom and the Pioneer Village with its working Grist Mill. But many of the other showcase activities center on the region's natural wonders, including Twin Caves and the old-growth Donaldson Woods. Staff conducts underground boat tours at Twin Caves from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Participants on these tours have an excellent chance of seeing bats, blind crayfish, and the endangered Northern blind cavefish. There are numerous hiking trails that outdoor enthusiasts can explore, ranging in difficulty from easy to rugged and from one-quarter mile to 2.5 miles in length. Other recreational activities include an outdoor Olympic-size swimming pool near the campground, sports courts, a nature center, picnic areas, shelter houses, and a large playground.

Virgil I. Grissom Monument

Map It!
407 S. 6th St. Mitchell, IN 47446

Description:

A 44-foot, 28-ton limestone statue of Virgil I. Grissom's Atlas Rocket with the Gemini 3 capsule stands on the park lawn of Mitchell's City Hall. The base of the monument consists of four 10 ton limestone tablets hand-carved with the history of Grissom's military and space flights. The monument took 15 years to complete and was funded entirely of donations from the Mitchell community and others from Indiana. It is on the site once occupied by the South Side Riley School, Grissom's elementary school. Bricks from the school were used for the wall surrounding the monument.
