WEEKEND INTERPRETIVE PROGRAMS

Weekends at Spring Mill State Park are never boring! This beautiful park has so much to offer, with the historic Pioneer Village, 9+ miles of hiking, a beautiful lodge & a lake for fishing and kayaking with your friends.

Saturday, May 15th

KIDS TO PARK DAY!

11am:  Snake Talk – Learn about Indiana’s snakes and meet two of our resident snakes.  Lakeview Activity Center.  30 minutes.

1pm:  Fish Prints on the Patio – Learn about what it means to be a fish and which ones live in our lake.  Create a beautiful fish print using paint.  Lakeview Activity Center back patio.  30 minutes

2pm:  Creek Stomp – Dip your feet into the cold creek to help the naturalist find macroinvertebrates.  Learn how they help determine water quality.  Meet by Pioneer Village Concession Stand (Ordinary).  30 minutes.

3pm:  Guided Scavenger Hunt – Help the naturalist find natural items while hiking a short distance by the lake.  Lakeview Activity Center.  Get a small prize for checking off all the items on the list.  30 minutes.

 

Sunday, May 16th

1pm:  Trail Camera TrekDiscover the wildlife that resides in Spring Mill State Park through pictures captured from our trail camera and see their habitats on this rugged hike on our Mountain Bike Trail. Meet Anthony at the Swimming Pool parking lot.  Moderate Hike. 2 miles, 1.5 hours.

3pm:  Trail 7 hike – Join the naturalist for a guided hike on one of our nature preserves.  Meet by Tulip Poplar Shelter.  1.75 miles.  Easy.  45 minutes.

Saturday, May 22nd

11am:  Trail 3 Hike – Join our naturalist for a walk through three nature preserves with so many wonderful natural resources to talk about.  Meet at Twin Caves Parking lot.  Moderately Rugged. 1.5 hours.

3pm:  Lime Kiln Hike  – Join Naturalist Chris for a hike around the lake and a trip back in time while you hear about lime kilns, CCC and more.  Lakeview Activity Center.  Partially Rugged.  1 hour

 

Sunday, May 23rd

1pm:  Mitchell Karst Plain Nature Preserve – Spring Mill has 3 amazing nature preserves.  Join us for a guided hike to learn about one of them.  Meet at Oak Ridge Shelter to hike trail 7 with Tony.  Easy hike.

35 minutes.

3pm:  Hamer Cemetery Tour – Meet Naturalist Chris at Hamer Cemetery to learn about our Pioneer Cemetery.  30 minutes.

Saturday, April 10th

9am-12pm:  Weed Wrangle Indiana® Event –Garlic Mustard Pull –  Join Spring Mill State Park in partnership with KIC (Lawrence County Keep Invasives In Check) and Friends of Spring Mill State Park at 9am by the Pool parking lot.  Learn to identify some invasive plants.  You’ll be given a map and bags to set off and pull garlic mustard.  At 11am, go to Pioneer Village parking lot and walk to the building near the restrooms to have your bag(s) weighed and receive a ticket for a free lunch provided by the Friends of Spring Mill State Park.  Lunch served from 11:15-12pm for participants only.  Bring your group to help Spring Mill become a healthier habitat for all wildlife.  Heaviest weighted bag(s) by an individual (not group) wins a 2021 Indiana State Park Pass.  Registration allows us prepare enough food for everyone who participates. Day-of volunteers are very welcome, but registered attendees will receive food first.  Please register before April 6th by contacting Sheree at sbelt@dnr.in.gov.

Sunday, April 11th

10am:  National Walk Week Volkswalk – Meet at Spring Mill Inn to choose between two guided hikes – A 10K (6.2 miles) OR a 5K (3.1 miles).  Hikes led by Bedford Hiking Club members.

1pm:  National Walk Week Trail 3 Hike – Enjoy a guided hike on trail 3.  Meet at Twin Caves parking lot.  2.5 miles.  1.75 hours.
