There is a place within the Southern Indiana rolling hills that’s called "Limestone Country" because of the stone terrain found there. It is the home of a special outdoor playground of caves, forests, rivers, Bluespring Caverns, Spring Mill State Park and the communities of Bedford and Mitchell.
Every year in mid-September, the city of Mitchell hosts the Persimmon Festival, fun-filled days and nights that pay tribute to the unique locally-grown fruit.
A persimmon is a plum-sized fruit that has an orange color with a unique flavor similar to pumpkin. Persimmon pudding is a baked pudding dessert with the texture of gingerbread. It is usually served in squares with a dollop of whipped cream.
The persimmon pudding contest is one of the favorite events at the annual Persimmon Festival. Many foods booths at the festival sell persimmon pudding to enjoy. In addition, persimmon pulp is available to purchase from local residents and farmers' markets during the fall months. So, you can enjoy persimmon pudding and the festivities at the persimmon Festival and purchase some persimmon pulp to make persimmon pudding at home, too!
