Spring Mill Inn – Past, Present and Future

March 2024 is the projected re-opening date.

In the meantime, The Spring Mill State Park will remain open during the Spring Mill Inn’s construction. Pioneer Village, Gus Grissom Memorial Museum, the trails (except around the Inn), the caves, picnic areas, playgrounds and the Nature Center will all be open and available for visitors. There are plenty of comfortable hotels and vacation rentals in the area. So, come enjoy and play!

Spring Mill Inn – Past

The Spring Mill State Park opened in 1930 in Mitchell, Indiana. Six years later, land was cleared to build the Spring Mill Inn. In 1937, construction began. Thanks to the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), native limestone was excavated and used to build the sturdy and stunning stone exterior.

Over the years, expansions and maintenance projects were completed. To increase the number of lodging rooms, an east wing was added in the 1960s. Then, in 1977, the pool and the Lakeview event room were constructed. Finally, in the early 2000s, new handicap accessible rooms and updates were finished. Along the way, minor improvements to electrical and HVAC were made as needed.

Spring Mill Inn – Present

Now, the time has come for a major overhaul.

Still structurally sound, the Spring Mill Inn is currently closed for extensive renovation. The immediately surrounding trails, pool and the parking garage are also closed during construction. Significant mechanical modernization is the largest component of this project. Otherwise, windows and doors will be upgraded to be more energy efficient. Several accessibility projects are planned. Cosmetic improvements include fresh paint, new flooring, updated furnishings and bathroom upgrades. Rest assured! The charming limestone exterior will remain, and the new windows and doors will be reminiscent of what was there originally.
