A 44-foot, 28-ton limestone statue of Virgil I. Grissom’s Atlas Rocket with the Gemini 3 capsule stands on the park lawn of Mitchell’s City Hall. The base of the monument consists of four 10 ton limestone tablets hand-carved with the history of Grissom’s military and space flights. The monument took 15 years to complete and was funded entirely of donations from the Mitchell community and others from Indiana. It is on the site once occupied by the South Side Riley School, Grissom’s elementary school. Bricks from the school were used for the wall surrounding the monument.
