Ordinary to Extraordinary Art Show

The Lawrence County Art Association will sponsor a new show featuring artwork that transforms ordinary scenes into striking works of art.  The theme will highlight how  local painters and photographers strive to look differently at the world around them by slowing down and seeing beauty in everyday settings and landscapes. Then they add design elements and principles, use color, and make the most of artistic license.

LCAA president Sammie Justesen says. “Rose Brenner’s street art is a perfect example of how ordinary local places can take on new depth and meaning in paintings.  The scenes don’t have to be perfect—just eye catching.  Artists like Rose try to capture the essence of a scene and emphasize special details we might otherwise miss.”

Describing her street scene titled One-Eyed Jack, Rose said, “This oil painting shows West 16 Street in Bedford with traffic and lighted signs.  The oncoming cars include one with a single working headlight, which is why I call the painting One-Eyed Jack.  I tried to get an impressionist feeling for this scene.”

The Ordinary to Extraordinary show will open on Thursday, March 26 at 1:00 p.m. and remain open through Saturday, April 17.   As always, artists participating in this show include award-winning professionals and teachers as well as those with budding talent. Their work ranges from traditional oil paintings to acrylic, colored pencil, watercolor, pastels, photography, and mixed media.

For people who would like more hands-on experience with the arts, Justesen says. “Beginning Saturday, April 3, on the first Saturday of each month from 10:30 a.m until 1 p.m., art instructor Deb Weld will be at the gallery with projects such as painting straw hats, making floor cloths, plus more traditional artwork. Deb will provide supplies and anyone over 14 is invited to drop in and participate.

“Our Thursday painters’ group also welcomes artists and visitors from 1 to 5 p.m. on Thursdays and colored pencil artists work at the gallery on Thursday mornings.”

The Wiley Art Gallery is located at 14th and J Streets in downtown Bedford, directly across from the Milwaukee Depot. Hours are Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m.; Fridays 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  For further information, visit Lawrence County Art Association on Facebook.
