SPRING MILL AND ITS RAILROADS:
A MISMATCH MADE IN CINCINNATI

SPEAKER: DAVID NORD, PROFESSOR EMERITUS

In the 1850’s Hoosiers were crazy for railroads. Hundreds of miles of tracks were laid down across Indiana in just a few years. Two Lines were build through Lawrence County, very close to Spring Mill Village. The New Albany and Salem R.R. passed a couple of miles to the west. The Ohio and Mississippi R.R. skirted the north rim of the Spring Mill canyon, just a few hundred yards from the Mill. Hoosiers loved their R.R. and the R.R. sometimes loved them back, but not always. This Presentation – with photos, maps and documents – is about how Spring Mill and Lawrence County, and Indiana came to terms with the railroad age. The story is complex sometimes quite positive and always fascinating. But for Spring Mill it is not a story that ends well.
