WEEKEND INTERPRETIVE PROGRAMS

Weekends at Spring Mill State Park are never boring! This beautiful park has so much to offer, with the historic Pioneer Village, 9+ miles of hiking, a beautiful lodge & a lake for fishing and kayaking with your friends.

Saturday, March 27th
1pm-4pm:  Fish Printing (gyotaku) Workshop:  Gyotaku is a traditional Japanese form of art that fisherman used over 100 years ago to keep a record of the fish that they caught.  Reserve a time slot on the hour between 1pm-4pm to come learn a little about the history behind this art while also finding out what is swimming in Spring Mill lake today.  Make your own fish print using our paper or bring your own piece of cloth such as a pillow case, handkerchief, etc.  (something that won’t get washed often)  40 minutes. Only one family/friend group or individual per time slot. Masks required.  Call 812-849-3534 or email Sheree at sbelt@dnr.in.gov to reserve your time slot.   $2 per person.

8pm:  Full Moon Hike – Join Anthony at Spring Mill Inn front patio for a brisk moon lit night hike and learn why the March full moon is called the “Full Worm Moon”.  Rugged Hike on Trail 3, 2.5 miles

 

Sunday, March 28th
1pm:  Cave River Valley Hike – Meet at Donaldson Cave parking lot to follow your guide 15 miles to Cave River Valley Natural Area.  Wear waterproof boots.  Very Rugged.  2 hours.

Friday, January 29th
7pm:  Full Wolf Moon Hike – Join us for a hike on our first full moon of 2021.  Meet Anthony at the Lakeview Activity Center for a fun night hike on Trail 5 and learn about the full wolf moon. 1 mile hike, 1 hour

 

Saturday, January 30th
8:30am:  Rise and Shine Hike – Meet the naturalist at Spring Mill Inn front patio for a hike on parts of trail 1, the road and trail 4.  Partially rugged, 1 hour.

11am:  Hamer Cave Hike – Meet the naturalist at the Grist Mill in the Pioneer Village for a short walk to Hamer cave.  Learn how it shaped our history and the life it still supports today.  Moderate hike, 20 minutes.

Winter Seed Sowing Workshop:  Prepare your seeds this winter for spring.  Reserve a time slot (10am, 11am, or 1pm) to come learn about how to care for your seeds/plants during this dormant season.  Make your own seed planter.  30 minute workshop.  10 people per time slot. $2 per person.  Masks required.  Call 812-849-3534 or email Sheree at sbelt@dnr.in.gov to reserve your time slot.

Sunday, January 17th
1pm:  Hamer Cemetery Tour – Meet the naturalist at Hamer Cemetery to hear about the people that lived and worked in the village in the 1800’s.  20 minutes
