In Indiana, summer brings so many opportunities to get outside and experience things we can’t do in the colder months. Here are the top 3 summer-fun activities we recommend you schedule in Lawrence County before fall.
Spring Mill State Park, Mitchell
This Indiana state park offers so much more than a typical state park. You’ll want to plan to stay all day or camp overnight. (Currently the Spring Mill Inn is closed for renovations through Spring 2024.)
The Grissom Memorial is a museum dedicated to Hoosier Astronaut, Virgil I. ‘Gus’ Grissom, who grew up in Mitchell, Indiana. Grissom’s first flight into space was aboard the capsule named “Liberty Bell 7.” He died aboard “Apollo I” when a fire broke out in the command module on the launch pad.
The Pioneer Village demonstrates authentic Hoosier life in the 1800s with 20 restored historic buildings to explore. The Grist Mill is the centerpiece of the village. While it may be under repair during the summer of 2023, it remains an impressive artifact of local historic industry.
In addition to the miles of hiking and biking trails, there are several caves to explore individually or during guided tours. Registration is required in advance for guided tours.
Bluespring Caverns Park, Bedford
Take a guided boat tour on the underground river that formed this cavern. At a cool 53 degrees year-round, this is a perfect spot on a hot summer day. During your tour, you’ll discover Northern blind cave fish and blind crawfish. Above ground, prospect for gemstone, fossils and arrowheads, and hike to Indiana’s largest sinkhole.
Holiday Drive-In Theater, Mitchell
Treat your family to a nostalgic evening watching a movie in or by your car at a drive-in theater. Located in Mitchell, the Holiday Drive-In has held on to the classic feel of a 1950s drive-in. Beneath the stars, eat popcorn and snacks from the concession stand and take in the latest double feature. It’s a slice of Americana everyone should experience.
